You might recognise this big-winged beauty from its bringer-of-babies fame. Surprisingly enough, storks aren’t actually where babies come from. They’re graceful wading birds that stalk flood plains and open grassland preying on insects, fish and frogs. Storks’ monogamous habits and commitment to nesting sites have inspired many cultures to celebrate them as symbols of faithfulness and devotion, and see the presence of their nests as a good omen. Despite this, with the expansion of intensive modern agriculture storks’ usual habitats are disappearing and populations are declining. In recent years they’ve been observed turning to rubbish dumps to scavenge food and using plastic debris to build their nests. We need to take action to protect much-loved species like storks. All proceeds from the release will be donated to Greenpeace.
