Deer hold a very special place in human hearts. Most of us think of Disney’s doe-eyed Bambi, but these ethereal creatures appear in cave paintings dating back 17,000 years and have featured in all kinds of myths and fairy tales for centuries since. For humans they typically symbolize strength and grace, but they’re vital to keeping the natural world healthy too. Deer maintain an environmental equilibrium and provide food for some of the world’s most epic hunters like jaguars, wolves and lynx. Human interference through hunting, habitat destruction and climate change throws everything off balance and can cause whole ecosystems to collapse. If plants die off, there’s less food for the deer and less deer for the predators. If the carnivores die off, deer overpopulation and disease can become an issue.
