This cute chubby chap is a common vole. Have you ever seen one? Maybe not - despite being one of Europe’s most numerous mammals, they’re pretty shy and rare to spot in the wild. They might be “common” for now, but intensive agriculture is pushing them out of the countryside fields they call home. Voles help keep fields and meadows lush and green by burrowing in the ground and churning up soil nutrients. A decline in vole populations will also affect the predators who eat them, like foxes and kestrels, pushing them to hunt other rarer species and throwing the food chain out of balance. We need to protect every creature, even if they’re tiny and not (yet) endangered. All proceeds from the release will be donated to The Heinz Sielmann Foundation.
